Story

As Lincoln Park Boring expanded into new types of work, including large parts, it needed to upgrade its legacy equipment. The company decided to invest in a new boring-mill machine from Fives Giddings & Lewis to handle new production capabilities and meet its customers’ changing demands.

The machine required robust controls to deliver the performance needed for the type of work Lincoln Park Boring performs. This led Fives, a FANUC-authorized integrator, to install a FANUC 0iF CNC.

Lincoln Park Boring wanted a control that had the flexibility to be used manually and could enable quick setups for low-part runs. Fives partnered with FANUC to customize the control’s human-machine interface with a subplate that has a separate joystick and includes the speeds and feeds. This allows operators to use the machine manually, so they don’t have to program the control to produce one or two parts.

The result is a machine that has more capabilities and can hold tighter tolerances than many of its other equipment. Additionally, the control is able to run the equipment faster to accommodate rapid travel rates.

Since the new FIVES machine tool, Lincoln Park has decided to retrofit one of their legacy machine tools with new FANUC controls.

Rick Yesue – Lincoln Park Boring Co

We’ve had very good luck with FANUC. We don’t have a lot of service calls. It’s the kind of thing where, when it’s not happening, you almost don’t notice it, but when you look back and you’ve had problems with other things, that’s when you notice it. Anything we retrofit would have a FANUC control.
